Class A vs Class B engineering bricks

Engineering bricks are rated Class A or Class B based on compressive strength and water absorption, and the difference matters more for some jobs than others.

Class A

The stronger, less absorbent of the two. Typically specified for below-ground work in aggressive ground conditions, retaining walls, and manholes where maximum durability is essential.

Class B

Still significantly stronger than a standard facing brick, and the more common choice for general engineering use — damp-proof courses, foundations, and oversite work on most residential projects.

Which one do you need?

For the vast majority of house-building and extension projects, Class B is sufficient and more cost-effective. Reach for Class A only when your specification or building control explicitly calls for it, or ground conditions are particularly severe.
